The Love Your Liver Movement

by Thea Ogunusi, Director of Student Services

Over the past month, our quarter programs had the opportunity to meet with guest speaker Paul Bolter about Liver Awareness. This 3.5 pound triangular shaped super star is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen below the diaphragm and is protected by ribs. Although the liver seems like a small organ, it happens to be the largest gland in the body. Liver functions include detoxification, nutrient processing, protein synthesis, storage, blood sugar regulation and cholesterol and bile production. You cannot survive without your liver however; it is one of the few organs that we can donate a portion of while still alive. Living adult donors can give up to 65% of their liver and it regenerates so that the donor and recipient can live full and healthy lives.

Paul Bolter, the Community Outreach and Educational Manager for the American Liver Foundationfacilitated our first event. He described the liver, its functions and ailments that affect it. He also described the causes and treatments for people with living with hepatitis, fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. As we move forward with this new partnership we hope to host additional events for the various majors and support the foundation’s endeavors.

Guest Speaker Paul Bolter & a group of CAMA students.

Paul will be returning to Swedish this Thursday, June 4th to speak to some of our afternoon and evening classes. Any students of the programs are invited, though Paul will continue to be meeting with each program in the coming weeks. The first session on Thursday will take place from 2:00pm-3:00pm for Surg. Tech, and later on from 6:15pm-7:15pm for MBC & CAMA.

Not only do we want to show that the Swedish community loves livers but we have the opportunity to promote liver health and educate on liver related illnesses. For more information on the Love your Liver Movement, please visit the American Liver foundation’s website and stayed tuned for future partnership events.
